Self Portrait. 31 Oct 2014. Daniel Graves
A self-portrait I had to create with Adobe Illustrator for my first week of Graphic Principles. I took a picture of myself and created a vector image from that picture. I went with a mix of styles, with a more realistic face and body, to a cartoonish background with the blood. I enjoy mixing styles that normally do not blend well with each other, in such a way that it seems natural and new. I used the scythe as the transition object; by keeping the photo realistic outline/shape while using the cartoonish colors that people expect to see. When in reality the colors are very dark and rusted, in fact the colors are inverted as the blade is a rusted reddish brown color and the handle is weathered and aged to a nice grey color.
My illustration of the Close Encounters of the third kind poster. 07 Nov 2014. Daniel Graves
For week two in Graphic Principles I had to recreate a movie poster using Adobe Illustrator, all while only using just 5 colors plus white as the background color (so 6 colors with white). I had a choice between a few different posters and went with the movie post for Close Encounters of the Third Kind, because I thought the mother ship UFO would be a nice challenge to recreate. I almost bit off more than I could chew with this one, as there are over 6000 different shapes in the mother ship alone. I spent over 6 hours just creating all the lights on the mother ship alone, not counting all the voids (black areas) and lines.
On a side note I cannot find any information on the original poster, who made it, when, and so on. If you know any of this information please let me know so I can give credit to the talented artist(s) who made the original.

Squirrel Cadavers. 14 Nov 2014. Daniel Graves
For week three in Graphic Principles I had to create a fictional concert flyer/poster using a description and sketch that the “band” provided in Adobe Illustrator. I had a very busy week and barely made the deadline, so I felt I could have done a little more work with the skull and shadowing. However it still turned out fairly well and was worth the effort of staying up late to meet the deadline.

The way life Should be. 21 Nov 2014. Daniel Graves
For my final project we had to create a Travel Poster for any location we like, as long as it is a real place (no middle earth) while keeping the poster simple and clean. I choice to do the state of Maine, using the fall leaves as my inspiration for the gradient of the setting sun. Most people hear Maine and think lobster, when that is only a small part of what the state is. Maine is a state filled with beautiful wildlife and forest, so I choice to use the moose as the main focus of the poster. But I still paid homage to the lobster/costal areas of Maine by putting the lighthouse in the background.
